Your Own Executioner: the Pavel decisions before Varenka

Full story spoilers. A Varenka train ticket alone does not settle Pavel’s story. Players who unlocked Your Own Executioner describe a son aligned with the state, Resistance choices made before boarding, and a final trip to the village. Their accounts disagree about money, so do not abandon a run solely because you declined a payment.

What successful players actually reported

In the linked Steam discussion, the original poster sent Pavel no money, encouraged conduct expected of a soldier, retained the Resistance notes, supplied Varenka and sent the train to the town. Another successful player reports skipping at least some payments while helping the town. The English achievement-guide author recommends sending money. Together these accounts undermine the claim that every transfer is mandatory.

At the supply window, compare Pavel’s requested payment with the balance shown at the top of the screen before responding. The player screenshot shows a balance of 0.95 against a requested payment of one unit, a disabled send button and a live timer. If that happens in your run, record the missed payment and the actual reply. The successful no-payment account gives you a reason to continue instead of abandoning the shift over that one choice.

Letters, notes and the dinner

For a planned attempt, start recording decisions when Pavel writes. The community guide favors telling what you know in the Director’s Questions letter, hiding Resistance notes, avoiding reports against the villagers and keeping the poison off the memorial carrots. Treat those as a reported sequence to follow. Neither the player thread nor the developer patch notes establish a universal numerical scoring formula.

Keep separate notes for replies to Pavel, replies to the Director, resistance slips found during peeling and village shipments. The final shift report counts answered letters, money sent to Pavel, denunciations and potatoes sent to the town separately. A player’s report illustrates those distinct lines. It does not expose a hidden loyalty score, so two runs with the same spending total need not share the same story history.

Two clues to read before the cab

The guide suggests checking whether Pavel’s final letter mentions school near the capital and whether the last Resistance note claims to have him. Those clues may help interpret the run before the locomotive. Choose Varenka to attempt the achievement. If you only receive The Last Harvest, compare the earlier letters to the player accounts before replaying the same lever with unchanged story history.

At the destination desk pick the central Varenka lever, check its label, and operate the departure chain. Read beyond the first village bulletin. In one player’s captured follow-up, Pavel is assigned to the firing squad and later promoted. That is a visible comparison point for this branch. Check the actual Steam unlock after the story text; the report and an achievement notification are different pieces of evidence.
